BEYOND BACOLOD, THE CITY OF SMILES: OUR FIRST GLIMPSE OF THE 2015 MASSKARA FESTIVAL

In the heart of the Philippines lies the charming city of Bacolod, known as the "City of Smiles." However, during the month of October, this city transforms into a kaleidoscope of colors and a hub of infectious joy as it hosts the annual Maskara Festival. In 2015, I had the privilege of attending this spectacular event with my boyfriend, an experience that left us enchanted and captivated.

As we stepped on the streets of Bacolod, we could feel the excitement in the air. The locals, all dressed in bright and vibrant costumes, welcomed us with warm smiles, setting the stage for an unforgettable adventure.

We discovered that the joy of the MassKara Festival extended beyond the streets as we explored the festival grounds. Various stalls and vendors offered intricately crafted masks for sale as souvenirs. These masks served as tangible reminders of the festival's spirit, and we couldn't resist bringing one home to capture a piece of Bacolod's magic.

The streets were transformed into a colorful canvas as beautifully adorned floats, lively dancers, and mesmerizing music filled every corner. The air was electric with the beats of the drum, and the streets echoed with the joyous laughter of both locals and visitors alike.

The street dancing competition is undoubtedly the highlight of the Masskara Festival. Elaborate costumes, pulsating music, and choreographed routines flooded the streets. The energy was contagious, and we found ourselves dancing along with the masked performers, completely absorbed in the rhythm of the celebration.

The intricate masks worn by the participants were crafted with meticulous detail. These masks range from traditional to modern, showcasing the creativity and artistry of the Bacolodnons. As we walked through the streets, we were amazed by the variety of masks, each telling a unique story and reflecting the cultural diversity of the region.

What sets the Maskara Festival apart is the strong sense of community spirit that permeates the event. The locals take great pride in their festival, and their enthusiasm is infectious. As visitors, we felt welcomed into the heart of Bacolod's culture, making the experience even more memorable.

Our experience attending the 2015 Maskara Festival in Bacolod was an unforgettable adventure. We had the opportunity to witness the vibrant soul of the city and immerse myself in a celebration of creativity, culture, and camaraderie. The Maskara Festival is more than just an event, it's a testament to the resilience and spirit of Bacolod. It leaves a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to be part of this annual extravaganza. So, if you ever find yourself in the Philippines during October, make sure to add Bacolod's Maskara Festival to your must-visit list for a cultural experience.
